Abuja FCT -Grassroot and Waste Management

Project start date March 2012

Project end date Till date 2014

Short description : Currents activities are grassroot projects implemented by the Bioresource Development Centres (BIODEC) located in Six Geopolitical zones across Nigeria; they include fingerling production, snailery, grass-cutter production and the production of other livestock of economic importance; and distribution of elite (disease free) planting materials to farmers.

Waste Management and Climate Change Impact Mitigation: The Environmental Biotechnology Department has designed and constructed infrastructure for biogas generation from organic wastes. The nationwide use of biogas would displace some of the fossil fuels currently used, leading to reduction in future greenhouse gases emissions. The Department has also designed and built eco-scan toilets. The toilets which are eco-friendly would see the save costs of use of water for flushing, as well as have the chance to generate energy from the biogas emitted from the eco-scan toilets.
